THE GENERATORS
Since 1997 THE GENERATORS have been spearheading the LA punk scene. Just recently they were named “most underrated punk band of our time” by no less than USA Today. However, the band history has been far more successful than this title would induce to think. THE GENERATORS were formed out of the ashes of a band called Doug & The Slugz, who were already signed to major label Warner Brothers before disbanding due to some of the band members' drug habits. Without missing a beat, mainman Doug “Dagger” Kane started THE GENERATORS with his childhood friend Mike Snow. Their eighth album 'Last Of The Pariahs' was released last September, once again delivering California punk with lots of melody and '77 punk influences. Welcome to SUMMER BREEZE for the first time ever! Fans of Bad Religion and The Offspring would be stupid to miss this.
SUBWAY TO SALLY
There's no way this band could be missing from the 15th anniversary of the SUMMER BREEZE Open Air. You could almost say SUBWAY TO SALLY belong to the festival's inventory. Their first appearance was in 2000, and in 2012 it's already going to be their sixth. They love the festival, and the fans love them, especially their music. By now, the Potsdam band are not only one of the biggest medieval rock bands, but they are one of the top names of the entire hard music scene. Therefore, mainman Eric Fish and his cohorts are a more than worthy headliner for your favorite festival's birthday edition. Get ready for a fireworks display of hits – ranging from heavy, danceable songs to tender and emotional ones! There is something for everybody here! And also don't miss their latest hit album 'Schwarz In Schwarz'.
SIX FEET UNDER
For the third time – after 2004 and 2008 – SIX FEET UNDER will grunt and groove SUMMER BREEZE into the ground. Chris Barnes, probably the most brutal growler in the scene, has assembled a completely new line-up around himself, which is still synonimous with straight-ahead groove death metal. In their brilliant 17-year career SIX FEET UNDER have produced tons of genre classics (such as 'Haunted', 'Warpath' and 'Maximum Violence', to name but a few). Their new, as-yet-untitled album, which should be in stores in time for SUMMER BREEZE 2012, is said to be a continuation of the aforementioned old marvels. You can look forward to a fireworks display of hits old and new! Any self-respecting death metal fan should have taken in classics such as 'Human Target', 'Revenge Of The Zombie' and 'War Is Coming' with their mother's milk!
SICK OF IT ALL
We are absolutely stoked to be able to celebrate our 15th birthday with another living legend. Ladies and gentlemen, SICK OF IT ALL! This way, SUMMER BREEZE 2012 becomes a double birthday party, for the flagship of New York Hardcore is already turning 25. To celebrate in style, they are releasing 'Nonstop', an album of re-recorded old classics from the band's extensive back catalogue. No doubt about it, at their second SUMMER BREEZE appearance SICK OF IT ALL will put a fist full of brutal hardcore classics and violent gang shouts right in your face. You will witness a K.O. the Klitschko brothers wouldn't be able to top. Guys, always keep up your guard! SICK OF IT ALL haven't come all the way to give up their position as leaders of the scene!
NAPALM DEATH
NAPALM DEATH are coming to lay waste to SUMMER BREEZE once more. In 2012 the inventors of grindcore haven't lost any of their impact and inimitable aggression. Best proof is their last show in Dinkelsbühl, when they beat every last bit of mud out of all attendants' brains at noon already , and their still-hot last studio album 'Time Waits For No Slave', which kicked in all of their younger competitors' teeth as they left them behind, showing who has and will always have the biggest balls in grindcore. There's only one thing you can do when this band plays, no matter if you're a normal festivalgoer or a musician: Look up to them! It's nice to see it's possible to exist for over 20 years in such an extreme genre without having to compromise one bit. Their success proves them right! Look forward to some immortal grindcore classics! By the way: NAPALM DEATH have already begun recording their 14th studio album. Maybe there will be new grind material ready in time for the festival!
MONO INC.
MONO INC. bring their alternative electronic gothic rock to SUMMER BREEZE 2012. With their poppy, straight and totally danceable songs, the Hamburg band have managed to make a name for themselves and gain more and more fans on their tours with acts such as Subway To Sally and ASP and recently also in the headliner position. With their last album 'Viva Hades' the three gentlemen and one lady managed to crack the German Top 50 for the first time. It's just that hard work does pay off after all, at least every now and then. With the aforementioned album MONO INC. have definitely reached their breakthrough, establishing themselves as one of the leaders in the German gothic scene. This is what a perfect mix of heavy guitars, melody and catchiness sounds like.
IN SOLITUDE
The spirits of evil and guardians of old metal are well disposed to the unholy 15th anniversary of SUMMER BREEZE, as they are sending their youngest, fiercest, hungriest warriors to the fight against the light in order to spread endless darkness over Dinkelsbühl. In mid 2011, Sweden's IN SOLITUDE cast their second demonic work 'The World. The Flesh. The Devil' upon mankind from the burning pits of hell, giving impressive proof that there are indeed young bands able to summon up the almost forgotten spirit of traditional bands like King Diamond/Mercyful Fate. Add to this the occult lyrical content and their frequent reminiscence of the NWOBHM, i.e. Iron Maiden, and everyone who's prone to traditional heavy metal in any way, shape or form won't be able to wait for the band's first-ever show at SUMMER BREEZE.
GHOST BRIGADE
When they played SUMMER BREEZE for the first time in 2009, GHOST BRIGADE were still considered an insider's tip. Three years down the line, their status has changed to one of the biggest hopefuls of the entire dark music scene. Their second and third albums, 'Isolation Songs' and 'Until Fear No Longer Defines Us', not only earned the title “Album of the Month” in Metal Hammer, they also managed to win over fans of scene greats such as Amorphis, Katatonia and Opeth. Which doesn't come as a surprise, since their highly atmospheric melodic death metal (a term which is actually much too narrow for the music's emotional bandwidth) sounds gripping, captivating and touching from the very first second. An emotional roller coaster ride on the highest musical level! These Finns show how to perfectly meld gloom and sadness on the one hand with rage and aggression on the other, creating a dense, homogeneous sound. Many bands have failed at this task!
DEEZ NUTS
In a time of general trendiness, even in the hardcore scene it takes major balls to call your full-length debut 'Stay True'. DEEZ NUTS dared to do so in 2008. And a few years later it has to be said they have succeeded, because at the moment there isn't a hotter contender in the young hardcore/metalcore scene than these Australians. Their energetic mix of hardcore, hip-hop and metal is totally electrifying, goes straight to the bone and is perfect for throwing your limbs around in the pit. And the die-hard metalheads among the SUMMER BREEZE audience shouldn't let the band's rather non-metal look turn them off either. This band is powerful and groovy through and through. Have fun at the DEEZ NUTS' first ever SUMMER BREEZE appearance!
DEATHSTARS
Of course, in our special anniversary best-of bill the DEATHSTARS' death glam metal couldn't be missing, as they have already given two magnificent performances at SUMMER BREEZE. A third fireworks display of hits – coinciding with the release of their new best-of album 'The Greatest Hits On Earth' – will follow in August 2012. Take some hard, cold, sterile guitar sounds a la Rammstein or The Kovenant, lay some synths and other electronic elements on top, mix them with some dark death metal vocals, and you get their extreme, danceable sound. The fact that the Swedes were exclusive support to Rammstein on their 2011 “Made in Germany” tour proves that the mix works and is popular. Not every band on earth can claim this kind of honour for themselves.
ANAAL NATHRAKH
British grand masters of aural choas ANAAL NATHRAKH are coming back to lay waste to SUMMER BREEZE for the second time after 2009. ANAAL NATHRAKH's savage blast beats and unrelenting riffs leave nothing but scorched earth in their wake. The Briton's all-destroying black metal anthems will cut an aisle of devastation in the audience, although their new hateplate 'Passion' leaves a lot more room for slower beats and therefore greater dynamics than their previous albums. Don't worry though, the Birmingham duo is in no way, shape or form lowering the level of brutality. Compared to this band, 90% of the extreme metal scene still look like cute little puppies who just want to play around, while ANAAL NATHRAKH have a deadly bite.
BEFORE THE DAWN
BEFORE THE DAWN already have six albums under their belts and are even signed to label giant Nuclear Blast. However, they still are undeservedly considered an insider's tip of the dark metal scene. Especially on their last three albums, 'Deadlight', 'Soundscape Of Silence' and 'Deathstar Rising', they have managed to place true classics such as ‘Deadsong’ and ‘Dying Sun’. It's seldom to hear such a perfectly balanced mix of epic clean vocals and monstruous grunts with a catchiness that will not be ignored by a wider audience for much longer. The Finn's musical foundation consists of powerful melodic riffs and song structures that cover the whole spectrum from heavy and driving to tender and fragile. It's for a reason they label themselves “melancholic Scandinavian metal”. Don't miss them! Especially not if one of your favorite bands is Amorphis.
BLACK SUN AEON
After 2009, SUMMER BREEZE will host the melancholic Tuomas Saukkonen show for the second time in 2012. Besides his main band Before The Dawn, we're happy to also welcome his ambitious side project BLACK SUN AEON again in Dinkelsbühl. Formed in early 2008, this band allows the Finnish musician to live out his darkest side. In four years, this talented multi-instrumentalist has produced no less than three studio albums (including one double album) under this monicker alone. And each one of them received much-deserved praise everywhere. This is deep, melancholic, emotional metal of the highest class, between heavy riffs, oppressive darkness and captivating vocal lines, made for life's solitary and depressive hours. An absolute must-see for all the dark souls among SUMMER BREEZE attendants. Proof of BLACK SUN AEON's quality can be found on the SUMMER BREEZE 2009 DVD, by the way. Don't miss them!
DARKEST HOUR
God knows why people keep throwing in DARKEST HOUR with the metalcore bands. In fact, the guys from Washington DC are a dyed-in-the-wool melodic death metal band. Sure, their tours with popular acts such as AS I LAY DYING and the likes make it easy to put the metalcore label on DARKEST HOUR, but the roots of their spectacular, energetic sound undoubtedly lie in mid-nineties Gothenburg. And the band was around long before the metalcore explosion anyway, which further underlines the theory above. But if you're not narrow-minded, then all these categorizations are null, because beyond all trends and styles there is only one thing that counts: good music! And DARKEST HOUR have a lot of that! Welcome for the first time at SUMMER BREEZE Open Air!
DARK TRANQUILLITY
DARK TRANQUILLITY don't really need an introduction. In the early nineties they started the Gothemburg melodic death metal wave together with In Flames and At The Gates. The influence of this movement can still be heard in many younger bands that are having great success. Look forward to a best-of set with tons of amazing tunes from classic albums such as 'The Gallery', 'The Mind's I' and 'Damage Done', which are all universal examples of melodic death metal. Add to this a frontman like Mikael Stanne, whose strong, likeable stage presence is without match, and an instrumental fraction that provides him with the perfect musical foundation for their songs. DARK TRANQUILLITY are going to teach you a lesson in melodic death metal, as they're one of the few who have managed to stay relevant and up-to-date without having to bend over backwards. An achievemnt not many can claim for themselves.
